News : UniKL and UNESCO – IHE into Smart Partnership

Delft, 24 May 2014 - A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and UNESCO Institute of Water Education (UNESCO-IHE) was held in the office of UNESCO-IHE in Delft, the Netherlands on 24 May 2014.

UNESCO-IHE is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world owned by all UNESCO member states. The institute is part of the UN Water family and is established as a UNESCO 'Category I Institute' jointly by UNESCO and the Government of the Netherlands. UNESCO-IHE is instrumental in the strengthening of efforts by the United Nations in developing technologies and increasing knowledge in the area of water science and engineering.

The MOU reaffirms the commitment of UniKL and UNESCO - IHE in supporting the research, development, demonstration and commercialization of scientific findings and technologies for the efficient, economical and environmentally friendly production of clean energy from hydro resources. Coordinated by the Sustainable Energy Analysis Laboratory of UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI) led by Dr. Engku Ahmad Azrulhisham, the cooperation will focus on development of sustainable run-of-river hydro power scheme for the purpose of fit-in-approval holder (FiAH) and rural electrification programmes.

As addressed in the agreement, UniKL and UNESCO - IHE will facilitate cooperative initiatives in the scientific and technological development of sustainable run-of-river hydro power scheme through joint research and postgraduate programs as well as organisation of professional courses and international conferences. The collaboration efforts are in line with the government's vision in increasing the capacity of electricity generated from hydro resources as well as access to all-hours electricity by rural community.

The MoU was signed by UniKL President / CEO, Professor Dato' Dr. Mazliham Mohd. Su'ud, and Professor Dr. Stefan Uhlenbrook, Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs of UNESCO - IHE. Also present during the event were Professor A. Szollosi-Nagy, Rector of UNESCO IHE and Associate Professor Dr. Jamel Othman, Dean of UniKL MFI.
