KUALA LUMPUR, 18 March 2016- MARA through Universiti Kuala Lumpur signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Japan's Premier Rail Service Provider, JR Kyushu, to explore opportunities including the development of programmes in the areas of education, the development of human capital, entrepreneurship, investment etc. especially in the field of Rail Industry and Technology held at Royal Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.
The signing of the LOI by Mr Toshihiko Aoyagi, President of JR Kyushu, Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad, Director General of MARA and Prof. Dato' Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su'ud, UniKL's President and CEO witnessed by from far left: Mr. Yoshinori Kodama, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of Japan to Malaysia, YB Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Minister at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, En Fazli Rizal Ismail, Head of Council Secretariat Unit of MARA and Prof. Dato' Hj. Ahmad Zahir Hj. Mokhtar, Deputy President, (International, Industrial & Institutional Partnership), UniKL.
The LOI signing follows a recent MOU signing between UniKL's Institute of Rail and Rapid Rail Sdn. Bhd. to establish a Rail Technology education and technical training Center of Excellence. The strategic partnership will pave way for UniKL and JR KYUSHU to undergo technology transfer process from Japan for the development of programmes under the Institute of Rail, UniKL.
MARA via UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing Technology (UniKL IPROM) is looking to explore programmes in rail technology to develop the human capital need of the nation. Through this LOI, aspects that both parties are looking into are exchange of technical expertise, coaching for trainers, lecturer exchange programme and Consultation.
The programmes which will be offered by UniKL will be in the areas of safety, operation, maintenance and discipline trough the syllabus of Rolling Stock, Signalling, Communication, Electrification and Customer Service. Among the programmes are short term courses, elective courses and consultation in the field of Rail Industry and Technology
Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in his address to the audience said, "The human capital development agenda is important for all the parties involved in the signing of this LOI. This ensures that the workforce developed will possess the right values and expertise in meeting the future demands of the industry."
Meanwhile, Toshihiko Aoyagi, President of JR Kyushu says, "JR Kyushu has been in the rail industry for over 100 years and is one of the oldest Rail Operators in Japan. This LOI signing today is just the beginning of many more ventures to come with MARA and UniKL. This joint venture is our first with an education institution outside of Japan. We believe this LOI has so much to offer and we will always be looking for areas and opportunities which can be developed further."
