The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

Research Highlights

 

 Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.


UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

 
His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.
 
"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : Outstanding UniKL Educator Honoured

A staff from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute  (UniKL MSI), Mohamad Riduan bin Ibrahim, received a National Outstanding Educator Award 2015 (Manufacturing) in the Private Education Excellence Awards ceremony held at the  Kirkby International College, Cyberjaya on Sunday, 17th May 2015.
 
Mohamad Riduan, a Senior Lecturer from Manufacturing  Section in UniKL MSI was awarded  based on his excellent achievements in several innovation competitions locally and abroad. One of his achievements was an award recipient in the 3rd World Inventor Award Festival in Seoul, Korea in 2014.
 
In his speech,  YBhg Dato' R. Rajendran, chairman of the Private Education Cooperative of Malaysia mentioned that  there were more than 200 nominations received from more than 50 private institutions.
 
Yang Berhormat Tuan P. Kamalanathan, Deputy Education Minister, officiated the event and presented the awards to all winners. 
 
Apart from Mohamad Ridhuan, there were three other lecturers from UniKL IPROM who were selected to receive finalist award.  They were  Dr. Adnan Ibrahim, Mhd Yunin Hassan and Nur Syazana Osman.
 
Private Education Excellence Awards was organized by the Private Education Cooperative of Malaysia in conjunction with Teachers Day Celebration 2015.  It is held annually to honour outstanding private educators in the nation. Outstanding teachers and educators from preschool to university levels were recognized under the categories of teaching, law education, science, arts and design, engineering, research and innovation, and humanity. 
 
Among the distinguished private educators honoured were Tan Sri Dato' Napsiah Omar of WIM College (Women Development), Raja Singham of Brickfields Asia College (Law), Zahara Abdul Malik of Krista Education Group (Preschool Education), Professor Dr Suresh Kumar Govind of Universiti Malaya (Humanity),  Professor Dr. Juhary Ali of Asia E University (Long Service Award), Dr. Pradeep Kumar Nair of Taylor's University(Education),  Associate Professor Dr. Manjit Singh Sindhu of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (ICT Innovation) and Professor Dr. Saw Sor Heoh of INTI University (Physics).
