Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

Research Highlights

Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.

"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : UniKL MSI researchers awarded gold medal at IIDEX2015

The invention of palm oil based multi-way magneto-rheological (MR) fluid valve, believed to be the first of its kind by a team of researchers from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI), has won them an Invention, Innovation & Design Exposition 2015 gold medal.

Team leader, Muhamad Husaini Abu Bakar, said the team came up with the invention of palm oil base as an innovative approach to replace a common MR fluid which is used a hydrocarbon oil as a carrier fluid.  This product potentially replaced a conventional hydraulic servo valve used in industry and capable to improve energy efficiency, high precision and compact in size give a significant improvement in hydraulic system.

"We are filing for a patent and the product using palm oil as the main element in MR fluid has given a new potential application of this commodity as smart materials where it state can change from liquid to solid with the presence of a magnetic field," he said when contacted.

During the same competition, 3 teams also won 3 silver medals for project Window Grill Assembly Jig (WinGAJ) under supervision Mohd Riduan Ibrahim, Portable Multipurpose Dryer (EZ6s) under supervision Nuraida Md. Hassan and Convenient Step Ladder (COSTEP) lead by Zulkarnain Abdul Latif.

Invention, Innovation & Design Exposition (iidex2015) is an annual International Exhibition and Competition organized by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The focus of iidex2015 is aligned with the National Higher Education Strategic Plan's third thrust is Enhancing Research and Innovation. The innovative products to participate in this event are required to have commercial values and marketability.
