Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

Research Highlights

Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.

"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : UniKL Wins 6 Medals At ITEX 2015

Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) team swept  six medals at the 26th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2015) that was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from May 21 to 23, 2015. UniKL, submitting its 6 products for the competition, scored a 100 per cent success when all of products won medals of 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medal.

With the tough criteria set this year for the jury, a project from UniKL MSI led by Muhd Nurhidayat bin Zahelem, entitled Brake Piston Remover Tool (BPR Tool) managed to get a gold medal for UniKL team.

Among the other UniKL winners who grabbed silver medals, were a team from UniKL MIMET with a  project entitled  Hybrid Hull, led by En. Azman Ismail, a project from UniKL MICET, entitled Energy Generation From Catalytic Gasification led by Dr. Kelly Yong Tau Len, a project of UniKL  MFI, Ecogreen CCM - Coconut Crusher Machine  led by Mohd Juraidi Jamal and a project from UniKL BMI led by En. Abdul Malik Ali entitled Monitoring Of Rehabilitation Process Via Motion Analysis.

Another project from UniKL MIMET, Smart Appliance Control System  Integrated With World Wide Telco Company led by En. Ahmad Makarimi Abdullah managed to contribute one bronze medal.
The 2015 ITEX was organised by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) for a 23-category competition with the participation of more than 1,000 products from 20 countries.
