News : Getting Your Work Published is Like Telling the World of Your Findings Seminar on Publication

Academic publication has now become a crucial requirement for institutions of higher learning. It is used as a benchmark of the prestige and performance of a personnel in an institution. Through publication, an institution will get multiple citations in journals from all over the world, which in the long run will elevate the institution's name and credibility.
In view of this, the Preclinical Department, Faculty of Medicine of Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Royal College of Medicine Perak organized a Seminar on Publication on 20th  and 21st October 2015. The seminar was attended by 25 scholars mainly from Universiti Sains Malaysia, British Malaysia Institute, Malaysia Spanish Institute and post- graduate students from AIMS University as well as academic staff from UniKL RCMP.
It is generally known that the world university ranking system uses publications as one of the criteria to rank universities. Publications also have become an indicator of the number and quality of research activities carried out in a particular university. Therefore, apart from research, academic writing and publishing activities have become the main focus of all universities across the world.
Chairman of the organizing committee, Norain Latif said this seminar managed to grab the attention of both academic and non-academic participants. She added that the seminar is suitable for beginners, intermediates and professionals who are keen to further improve their writing skills and publishing activities. She hoped the 2-day seminar would fulfill the needs of many academics, researchers, medical and health professionals and scholars in their attempt to produce and publish good academic writing, be it a journal article or a book.

The seminar in publication started off with a presentation from Professor Dr. Onn Haji Hashim, from the Department of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya on the Art of Publishing I: Drafting a Manuscript and The Art of Publishing II: Where to Publish.
Talking on the Art of publishing, Prof Dr. Onn said, "Getting your work published is like telling the world of your findings besides the recognition and rewards that could follow. Your research is like telling a story. Start by asking if you have a good story to tell. Is the story original? Is it interesting? Can you convince your peers and can you write well? He said high-impact papers need strong evidence and noteworthy conclusions.

Associate Professor Dr Abrizah Abdullah, Research Fellow of Malaysia Citation Centre, Ministry of Education Malaysia presented the talk on "Scholarly Communication I: Understanding Journal Impact Factor & Deciding Where to Publish" followed by Scholarly communication II: How a Research Should be Evaluated?
Professor Dr Abrizah said good quality research articles are being sought by editors to publish in their journals. Prior to that the subject should be compelling, well researched, and well written.
She informed the researchers, "Many articles are written but few are accepted. This is due to multiple submissions, redundant publications, unacceptably poor English and paper is of limited interest or covers local issue only".

She added, academic ranking of world universities (ARWU) uses six objective indicators to rank world universities. Among the six are number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomas Reuters and  number of articles published in journals indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index. More than 1200 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year.
